When I started practicing law in 2010, Scottsdale Jail was an option for all of my clients who resolved their DUI case at Scottsdale Court. Somewhere around 2012, Scottsdale closed its courthouse causing all my Scottsdale clients convicted of DUI to serve their sentence at Maricopa County Jail – for years it was Tent City, but since Paul Penzone has been in office, Tent City is closed and another facility is used. Serving jail in Maricopa County is extremely inconvenient. First it’s far, it’s located on 35th Ave and Lower Buckeye – not a great place to have to travel to in the middle of the night. Second, people, even those there for a DUI, are housed with the general population. The general population is unkempt and uncomfortable. Not the type of crowd my clientele is used to being around.
Here’s a bit of good news for those who have to serve jail time after a DUI conviction, Scottsdale Jail is open again. Not only is it open to people who had a DUI case at Scottsdale Court, it’s open to everyone in Arizona who has to serve a couple of days in jail for a DUI sentence. This is great for my clients that have cases in cities outside of Scottsdale. Scottsdale jail is clean and convenient. To be eligible, you must make an appointment and ask your assigned judge for permission.
